MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team is set to head to regional rival Evansville for a midweek matchup. First pitch is slated for Wednesday, April 3 at 6 p.m.
UT Martin (11-16) is coming off a week in which they won three games (won against Union and took the series from Morehead State). In the four-game week, the Skyhawks saw Creighton Eldridge move into third all-time in program history for career triples. Nick Wohlbold tallied a pair of saves over the course of the week which gives him six total on the season. The six saves for the sophomore put him in third place in school history for the most in a season and rank seventh in program history for most in a career.
Leading the Skyhawks at the plate is the duo of Casey Harford and Jordan Stoner. Harford sports a team-high .341 batting average to go along with five doubles and 14 RBIs while also getting on base at a squad-best .408 percent. Stoner boasts a .327 batting clip along with a team-best two homers and 17 RBIs. He has also swiped five bases on the season. Sean Dixson is coming off of a week in which he hit to the tune of a .467 average while tallying a double, triple and pair of long balls to put up a 1.067 slugging percentage. Eldridge has proven his threatening speed on the base paths as he is a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts which paces the club.
Right-handed pitcher Seth Petry (1-0, 5.11 ERA) is scheduled to get the starting nod against Evansville. The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native has been superb in his two midweek starts on the season as he has compiled 8.1 innings of allowing just two earned runs, three hits and two walks. He has sat down six batters in that span and has held opposing batters to a paltry .103 batting average and given up no extra-base hits. Wohlbold (0-1, 0.95 ERA and six saves) has been an extremely important piece to the UT Martin bullpen as he has posted 26 strikeouts across 19 innings as the Skyhawk closer.
Pacing Evansville (14-9) in offense is the bat of Nate Reeder. He has built up an impressive .349 batting clip, .456 on base percentage and .523 slugging percentage to combine for an OPS of .979. Reeder has compiled a team-best 30 base knocks on the season to go along with six doubles, three homers and 17 RBIs on the season while also swiping a trio of bases. Tanner Craig and Danny Borgstrom have each tallied over a .300 batting average and 20+ RBI season so far. The duo of Sam Troyer and Troy Beilsmith have combined for a total of 13 stolen bases.
Freshman righty Shane Gray (1-0, 3.33 ERA) looks to toe the rubber for the Purple Aces. He has appeared in nine games while getting the starting nod in two contests. Gray has tossed over 24 innings so far on the season and has recorded 20 strikeouts in that span. Reliever Austin Allinger and David Ellis have been key pieces to the Evansville bullpen as the pair have combined for over 21 innings and 17 whiffs under 10th-year head coach Wes Carroll.
