AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team hung with No. 15 ranked Auburn this evening before falling 2-0.
UT Martin (4-8) matched the Tigers' in the hit column with three as Robert Worley, Noah Thigpen and Reid Pope all tallied base knocks. Blake Daniels, Blake Davis and Worley each drew a walk on the evening.
Austen Bullington (0-2) took the tough loss in his 6.2-inning start. The Newburgh, Ind. native allowed just two hits, issued three walks and gave up one earned run while he fanned six batters along the way. Sam Folks logged 0.1 inning and gave up an earned run in the process but sat down a Tiger via the strikeout. Nick Wohlbold clocked in for an inning of perfect baseball to finish the game.
The Skyhawks looked to get something started in the first inning as Jordan Stoner reach base with two outs as he was hit by a pitch. He then moved up to second base on a passed ball but was unable to cross home plate.
Bullington fanned the first batter of the second frame of action before issuing a walk. He then found a pair of friendly ground balls to end the inning. He made quick work of Auburn in the third as he forced two flyball outs before closing out the frame with a strikeout.
UT Martin saw itself in a prime position in the fourth as Daniels led off with a free base later followed by Worley drawing a walk also but to no avail.
The Tigers struck for a run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead on a solo home run but Bullington was able to make quick work around the dinger and kept his composure throughout the contest.
The next prime opportunity for the Skyhawks to put runs on the board came in the seventh when Davis led off the frame with a nine-pitch walk followed by a Thigpen base knock to left field. A Tyson Cox flyout would be enough to move Davis to third and then a wild pitch shifted Thigpen to second to put a pair of runners in scoring position but it would not be in the cards.
Auburn added on another run in the eighth to give the final score of 2-0.
UT Martin opens Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend when they travel to Southeast Missouri on Friday, March 8. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
