CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Craig Randall II established a new career-high with 33 points this afternoon but the University of Tennessee at Martin fell victim to a hot-shooting Austin Peay squad, 92-78, in Ohio Valley Conference men's basketball action.
Randall's 33 points eclipsed his previous single-game high of 21 points when the junior guard played for Memphis against Savannah State on Nov. 19, 2016. The Youngstown, Ohio native shot 12-of-18 from the floor – including a 6-for-10 effort from three-point land – to help the Skyhawks race out to a 42-40 halftime lead. However, the host Governors (21-8, 13-3 OVC) hit 14 of their 28 three-point attempts on their way to the win.
Quintin Dove tallied his second straight double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds for UT Martin, who is now 10-17 overall with a 5-11 OVC mark. Delfincko Bogan (13 points) reached double-figures in the scoring column for the 11th straight game as the Skyhawks shot 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the charity stripe.
Austin Peay was led by Zach Glotta's 26 points while Terry Taylor collected 25 points and 12 rebounds. The Governors also received 18 points from Chris Porter-Bunton as Austin Peay outrebounded UT Martin by a 41-30 margin.
"This is a very tough place to play," Skyhawk head coach Anthony Stewart said. "It was a great environment and that's what college basketball is all about. That's a very good team that we just played and when you get beat on the glass like we did, the law of averages isn't in your favor. We had to play some small ball because of foul trouble and they took advantage of that on the rebounding end. We were right there for most of the game – it just wasn't enough."
Randall began the game on a scoring spree – tossing in 11 of UT Martin's first 13 points in the opening 4:38. A Dove jumper at the 14:47 mark capped off an 8-0 run and resulted in a 15-8 Skyhawk advantage. Overall, UT Martin nearly led for 13 minutes in the opening half, shooting 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field. Dove contributed the Skyhawks' final four points of the stanza before Glotta knocked down a three-pointer just before the break to provide the 42-40 halftime score. Dove (14 points) and Randall (13) guided UT Martin in scoring in the first half while Glotta's game-high 15 points paced the Governors.
Austin Peay took a 47-46 lead with 17:20 to go but a Randall jumper just 20 seconds later tilted the score back in the Skyhawks' favor. However, that would be the last time that UT Martin would hold the advantage as the Governors reeled off a 12-4 run immediately thereafter. An old-fashioned three-point play by Bogan trimmed the Skyhawk deficit to 62-59 but that was ultimately as close as UT Martin would get the rest of the way as Austin Peay scored the next eight points of the contest to take a double-digit lead with 7:31 to go.
The Skyhawks will look to clinch an OVC Tournament berth next week when they return home for the final two games of the regular season. UT Martin takes on Belmont at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 before squaring off against Tennessee State for Senior Day at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.
