UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS OPENS A THREE-GAME ROAD SWING AT SIUE ON SATURDAY
2/15/2019 9:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin will open a three-game road swing to close out the away portion of the 2018-19 season with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference rival SIUE on Saturday, Feb. 16. Tipoff from the Vadalabene Center is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. with the contest slated to be broadcast exclusively on ESPN3.
The Skyhawks (17-7, 9-4 OVC) enter the final road swing of the season hoping that some of the team's home success packs a bag as well. UT Martin has won just 5-of-11 road contest this game – including playing .500 (3-3) ball in league play. With the Skyhawks currently sitting one game out of second place with five games to play, each game becomes more critical in the final OVC standings.
UT Martin improved to 65-48 under head coach Kevin McMillan following a loss with a 61-50 victory over Southeast Missouri on Thursday evening. While UT Martin's offense struggled for much of the contest, the defense held Southeast Missouri to just 28.8 percent 4from the field while forcing 19 turnovers and notching nine blocks. Sophomore Chelsey Perry would pace the Skyhawks with her fourth career double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks in the contest. Freshman Brittni Moore was also effective in the contest, scoring 16 points against the Redhawks while tallying five rebounds.
The contest pits two of the league's most respected head coaches in UT Martin Kevin McMillan and SIUE's Paula Buscher. McMillan ranks third in OVC history with a career mark of 190 victories while Buscher sits just outside of the top-10 with 104 wins at SIUE.
SIUE (11-13, 6-7 OVC) is looking to improve upon the team's OVC Basketball Championship résumé after notching a 78-62 victory over Eastern Illinois to earn the series sweep. The Cougars are led offensively by Allie Troeckler with 8.6 points and 5.9 rebounds while Micah Jones has returned from injury last offseason to average 9.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in OVC play.
Saturday's game will serve as the 25th meeting between the two programs in a series dating back to 1986. UT Martin holds a 16-8 advantage in the series after winning the previous matchup on Jan. 26 in which Chelsey Perry (19 points), Kyannah Grant (11 points) and Maddie Waldrop (10 points) each scored in double figures for the Skyhawks while Jay'Nee Alston's 18 points proved to be a team-high for the Cougars. Overall, UT Martin is 3-4 in games played in the Vadalabene Center since the 2009-2010 season.
The game will be televised live on ESPN3 with announcers Bob Belvin and Ray Giacoletti on the call. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM to hear Chris Brinkley provide analysis.
