MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team notched a clean sweep of the season series against Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri on Thursday night with a 61-50 victory in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
The Skyhawks (17-7, 9-4 OVC) were held well below their season scoring average of 81.4 points per game but found a way to pull away in the fourth to secure the squad's 12th home victory of the season. As a team, UT Martin shot just 33.9 percent from the floor while the team's defense kept the team in control, holding their opponent to just 28.8 percent from the floor – including just 15 percent from beyond the arc where the Redhawks attempted 20 shots.
Sophomore Chelsey Perry posted another big performance, notching third double-double of the season with 17 points, 11 rebounds. She added to her stat-stuffing performance with a career-high seven blocks, finishing just one off the program record. Joining in the action was freshman Brittni Moore who continued her hot stretch from the floor, scoring 16 while tallying five rebounds to post a pair of scorers in double figures.
"We never really got in a good rhythm," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. "I thought defensively we defended well but didn't finish it with rebounds and loose balls. We are in a spot where we could get really good by the end, but we are going to have to grow up. We have a lot of basketball left, but not a lot of time to figure out what you need to be doing by tournament time to be successful."
Southeast Missouri (11-13, 6-7 OVC) had a pair of players score in double figures, including sophomore start Tesia Thompson who tallied 11 points, 16 rebounds, six steals and five turnovers in the contest. She was joined in double figures by Carrie Shephard with 12 points.
UT Martin will hit the road for the next three games beginning with a matchup at OVC rival SIUE on Saturday, Feb. 16. Tipoff from the Vadalabene Center is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
