BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced its 2018-19 predicted order of finish for men's golf today, as the University of Tennessee at Martin was tabbed to finish sixth in the league standings.
The Skyhawks received 51 points in the poll, which was voted on by the OVC's head coaches. Jacksonville State tallied nine of the 11 first-place votes and 99 points as the league favorite, followed by SIUE (one first-place vote, 85 points) and Eastern Kentucky (one first-place vote, 80 points). Morehead State (76) and Austin Peay (58) rounded out the top-five while Belmont (48), Tennessee Tech (42), Murray State (34), Tennessee State (22) and Eastern Illinois (10) followed UT Martin.
"I expected to be picked in the middle of the league, as our team showed some inconsistency during fall play," Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "All of our players got valuable experience during our fall tournaments and have worked during the offseason on their conditioning to prepare for the spring season. Our team is better than sixth place, we just have to compete and post some good rounds. The trophies aren't handed out until the end of the OVC Tournament."
UT Martin ranked third in the OVC in scoring average (289.1) during the fall, placing in the top-five in four of its five tournaments. Individually, the Skyhawks boasted a pair of golfers in the top-six in the OVC in scoring average, led by Tate Chumley (70.6, fourth) and Ross Redmont (71.3, sixth).
A sophomore out of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Chumley carded four top-10 finishes in the fall and is just 0.4 strokes off the best scoring average in the league. Redmont accounted for a pair of top-10 finishes in the fall, as the redshirt junior from Memphis, Tenn. earned an all-tournament spot in the Murray State Invitational on Sept. 10-11.
Wolf earned a spot on the All-OVC last season and currently ranks third on the squad with a 73.2 stroke average. The lone senior on UT Martin's squad is Cameron Smith, who was responsible for a 74.4 scoring average during the fall.
Peyton Dix tied Chumley and Wolf for the team lead in rounds played (14) over the course of the fall, generating a 74.7 stroke average. Shelden Barina showed flashes of potential during his first collegiate semester, chalking up one top-10 finish on his way to a 75.0 scoring average.
Jack Story's 75.1 scoring average followed closely behind while Mason Chandler (75.7) produced the best finish of his collegiate career in the Skyhawk Fall Classic last October.
UT Martin begins its spring season on Feb. 23-25 at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.
