COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team kept its Ohio Valley Conference title hopes alive behind a strong 2-1 road victory at Tennessee Tech on a wet and chilly Friday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (7-5-5, 5-2-2 OVC) played a game which was moved up five hours to avoid poor playing conditions despite facing both the Golden Eagles and Mother Nature in the Friday showdown. In spite of the rain soaked pitch, UT Martin posted a much needed win to remain in contention for the program's second consecutive OVC championship while moving into sole possession of third place with 17 points, sitting just two points out of first. With the win, the Skyhawks solidified an unbeaten season against Tennessee opponents.
UT Martin looked to strike early in the contest and did just that as Hendrikje Baurmann found the back off the net off an assist by Jill Hildreth less than three minutes into the match. The showdown would remain a one-goal contest until the Skyhawks added to their margin in the 80th minute off a goal by Isabel Almarsdottir set up by assists from junior Alice Adams and Kamryn Chappell. Tennessee Tech would score a goal in the final minute but could not find the equalizer.
Junior Bella Roberts paced the team with three shots on goal while a total of eight different Skyhawks tallied multiple shot attempts en route to a game-high 18 shots. Baurmann's goal marked the fifth of the season for the sophomore while Almarsdottir found her first career goal as a Skyhawk.
Goalkeeper Erica Myers was solid, holding the Golden Eagles scoreless for the first 89 minutes of the contest. The defense would prove to be supportive of their keeper as Myers tallied just one save.
The loss dropped the Golden Eagles (6-6-5, 4-2-3 OVC) into a tie for fourth place. Cassidy Bereda paced the team with four shot attempts while Tennessee Tech found its lone goal from Katie Shipley off an assist from Rachel Blow. Goalkeeper Isabelle Austin would play tough, tallying 10 saves while allowing two goals.
UT Martin will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 27 with a matchup against Jacksonville State. The Skyhawks will conduct their Senior Day activities prior to the start of the match slated for 2 p.m.
