
UT MARTIN VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN THREE SETS TO OVC LEADER MOREHEAD STATE

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team could not extend its winning streak today as the Skyhawks fell to Ohio Valley Conference contender Morehead State (14-25, 15-25, 22-25).
Less than 18 hours after UT Martin hit its highest hitting percentage in OVC play in over 16 years, the Skyhawk offense struggled today with 23 attack errors leading to a .090 performance. On the flipside, Morehead State (15-6, 6-2 OVC) hit .371 on its way to the win.
Kenzie Hinshaw registered 25 assists and six digs for UT Martin (7-15, 3-5 OVC) today, also adding three kills on a .273 hitting percentage. Logan Wallick had a team-best seven kills while Hannah Phillips and Lucy Kaufman each scooped up a team-high eight digs. In addition, Wallick and Gintare Mackeviciute shared the team lead with three blocks apiece.
Addison Conley got the Skyhawks going with three kills in UT Martin's first five points but the Eagles took a 10-5 lead behind a 6-1 run. Wallick and Karen Scanlon each provided two kills midway through the set before another Conley kill and a Mackeviciute solo block made the score 18-12. However, Morehead State tallied seven of the final nine points to take the opening stanza.
The second set began with a Justine Walker kill but the Eagles soon took a 5-2 advantage. Jessica Reynolds then caught fire, slamming down three kills in the span of three points for the Skyhawks. Soon thereafter, Morehead State reeled off four unanswered points but UT Martin to go on top by a 14-6 margin but the Skyhawks kept chipping away. After a Mackeviciute kill whittled UT Martin's deficit to five, the Eagles managed six of the last seven points in the set.
A total of eight tie scores and five lead changes were on display during the third set. Midway through, the Skyhawks went on an extended run – scoring 10 out of 14 points – to take a 13-9 lead after a Kaufman service ace. After Morehead State closed within a single point at 15-14, a kill by Phillips ignited a 4-0 spurt that forced the Eagles to call timeout when UT Martin's advantage ballooned to 19-14. Morehead State responded with a 7-1 run to briefly reclaim the lead but Mackeviciute had a hand in two straight points (kill, block assist) to flip the advantage back in favor of the Skyhawks at 22-21. However, the Eagles wrapped up the match with four unanswered points.
UT Martin puts the finishing touches on its five-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when it faces in-state foe Middle Tennessee. First serve from Skyhawk Fieldhouse is set for 6 p.m.
