MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle program is ready to compete at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships this weekend in Jacksonville, Ala. The two-day competition will kick off at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 beginning with smallbore firing and air rifle to follow on Sunday, Feb. 3 beginning at 9:45 a.m.
"We are looking forward to travelling to Jacksonville State for the OVC Championships," head coach MJ Vowell said. "It is always good to competing against the other teams and celebrating each other's accomplishments for everyone's hard work throughout the season. Any team can win on any given day and you never want to count the underdog out of a matchup. Next year we will host the OVC Rifle Championships and we can't wait for it to be
UT Martin's turn to take the reins on a conference tournament."
UT Martin has used the fall and early spring slate of events to fine tune their skills. The young Skyhawks have seen several freshmen make waves while battle-tested sophomores and upperclassmen set the pace for the squad. The team consists of senior Andre Delcalzo, juniors Kaitlin Korinek and Amanda Mayo, sophomores Celia Gelpey, Jacob Osborne and Kalen Royal and freshmen Abigail Donald, Tristan Grisham, Rachel Mills and Rachel Sprague.
Korinek and Sprague have led the way for the team as both have split the team lead in top smallbore and air rifle scores throughout the year. Sprague has tallied a team-best 1,175 aggregate while her smallbore score of 586 tops the squad and Korinek's air rifle score of 592 leads all Skyhawks. The team fired a season-high aggregate of 4,603 at Jacksonville State back on Nov. 17 (when the aforementioned scores were tallied).
