MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team wrapped up its competition at the Ohio Valley Conference Rifle Championships this weekend.
UT Martin took home seven postseason honors with Rachel Sprague headlining as the OVC Freshman of the Year. Kaitlin Korinek garnered an Air Rifle All-OVC First Team selection with Sprague earning a place on the Air Rifle All-OVC Second Team. Korinek also worked her way into the Smallbore All-OVC Second Team. Sprague tallied both a Smallbore and Air Rifle All-Newcomer team selection with Abigail Donald joining her on the squad in air rifle.
The Skyhawks tallied their second-highest aggregate of the season as they posted a total of 4,594. Korinek led the way for the team in smallbore as she tallied a score of 579 with Sprague on her heels with a posting of 577. The duo of Andre Delcalzo (567) and Celia Gelpey (564) also counted for the team total of 2,287. Jacob Osborne recorded an individual score of 552 in the discipline. Delcalzo's 567 notched a career high for the senior.
In air rifle, the one-two punch of Korinek (590) and Sprague (588) paced the squad with Gelpey (566) and Donald (563) also counting for the team total of 2,302. Osborne racked up a score of 559 as he fired as an individual in the relay.
"The team performed really well this weekend," head coach MJ Vowell said. "Although we finished fourth place, we tallied our second-highest aggregate of the season. That goes to show that everyone gave their best effort and put in a solid performance. The other teams and coaches are very supportive which makes for a great environment. I couldn't be more pleased out of the whole team – with six individuals firing but the rest of the team was right there with them for support. I am very proud of all of the postseason honors that we have earned as well as the leadership out of senior Andre Delcalzo. He has been a great leader throughout the season and has proven to be the ultimate leader in the classroom as well as he has been named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll every year he has been here. We look forward to the NCAA Qualifier coming up in a couple of weeks in order to get to the big dance at West Virginia."
UT Martin will next compete in the NCAA Qualifier hosted by Murray State on Feb. 16.
