RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior center Jailen Gill collected a game-high 19 points for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad but the Skyhawks could not recover from a sizeable first half deficit in a 97-73 loss at Eastern Kentucky.
UT Martin (5-11, 0-5 Ohio Valley Conference) led early in the first half but a 33-3 run helped the Colonels claim a 55-30 halftime advantage. The deficit was too much for the Skyhawks to overcome as UT Martin committed a season-high 23 turnovers in the game.
Gill knocked down six of his nine shot attempts and added a perfect 7-of-7 effort from the free throw line. The Kansas City, Mo. native also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds in 1 2minutes of play. Fatodd Lewis (14 points, seven rebounds), Kevin Little (14 points, three assists) and Preston Parks (13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals) also scored in double-figures for the Skyhawks.
Eastern Kentucky (8-10, 1-4 OVC) was led by Dujuanta Weaver's 18 points. Houston King tallied 16 points while Jomaru Brown and Nick Mayo added 14 and 13 points, respectively, for Eastern Kentucky – who made 15-of-34 three-pointers (44.1 percent) in the contest.
"Eastern Kentucky shot the ball really well and we dug ourselves a pretty deep hole in the first half," UT Martin head coach Anthony Stewart said. "We played better in the second half but still not up to the level that we expect. We still have a lot of work to do but our guys aren't giving up. We aren't making excuses but we have to do better."
The Colonels scored the first six points of the contest but Gill answered by tallying nine of UT Martin's first 14 points. A Delfincko Bogan layup and a Derek Hawthorne, Jr. free throw at the 10:35 mark of the first half gave the Skyhawks their last lead of the game before Eastern Kentucky's prolonged scoring run. UT Martin went on an 8-2 run towards the end of the first half but the Skyhawks could not shake off 14 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Gill's nine points and Brown's 12 points paced their respective squads in the first half.
Gill scored UT Martin's first six points of the second half but the Skyhawks would not get any closer than 24 points the rest of the way. The trio of Little (11), Lewis (10) and Parks (seven) combined to score the final 28 points of the game for UT Martin in a span of 9:41.
The Skyhawks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they take on Morehead State. Tipoff time from Johnson Arena is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. CST.
