MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team puts the finishing touches on a grueling road swing when it pays a visit to Johnson City for a matchup against in-state rival ETSU. Tipoff on Saturday, Dec. 8 is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST.
The Skyhawks (3-3) will look to salvage a split on a road trip that will include almost 1,700 miles of travel and will spread across parts of six days. This will be the first-ever meeting between UT Martin and ETSU as the Buccaneers were the only one of the 11 other Division I schools located in the state of Tennessee that the Skyhawks had never faced.
On Wednesday, UT Martin endured its worst shooting performance of the young season in an 87-74 setback at Tulane. The Skyhawks forced 19 turnovers and only committed eight miscues themselves but were mired in a 38.5 percent shooting night which included a 4-of-29 effort from three-point land.
Despite its shooting woes, UT Martin placed a trio of scorers in double-figures. Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selection Fatodd Lewis poured in a season-high 20 points to lead the Skyhawks in scoring for the first time this season. Kevin Little (15 points) and Parrish Hewitt (10) also guided a UT Martin offensive attack that outscored the Green Wave by a 28-12 margin in bench points.
ETSU, who has pieced together 83 victories under head coach Steve Forbes since the start of the 2015-16 campaign, is 7-3 on the season and a perfect 5-0 at home after a 107-60 thrashing of Reinhardt University on Monday. In that game, the Buccaneers more than doubled up their competition on the glass (64 to 26) while connecting on a sizzling 70.4 percent (19-for-27) of their field goal tries over the final 20 minutes.
In all of Division I basketball, ETSU trails only Kentucky in rebounding margin (+15.1). Junior forward Jeromy Rodriguez leads the nation in total rebounds (120) and already boasts five double-doubles in 2018-19.
