MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad faces its second consecutive 2018 postseason opponent on the road when it takes on the Mercer Bears out of the Southern Conference on Friday, Nov. 16. Tipoff from Macon, Ga. is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.
This marks the first meeting between the Skyhawks and Mercer on the hardwood. It is also the first time that UT Martin has visited the state of Georgia since a 76-75 overtime victory at Kennesaw State on Feb. 14, 2012.
The Skyhawks (1-1) are coming off an 86-71 setback on the road against preseason Conference USA favorite Western Kentucky last Saturday. Delfincko Bogan and Kevin Little each dialed up a team-best 18 points while Derek Hawthorne, Jr. contributed a career-high 17 points for UT Martin, who was within six points of the host Hilltoppers with 15 minutes remaining.
Through two games this season, the Skyhawks have displayed a formidable defense. UT Martin is forcing the opposition into 17.5 turnovers per contest while limiting its opponents to a miniscule 25.7 percent shooting mark (9-of-35) from three-point range.
Fresh off a 19-win season and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational in 2017-18, Mercer is off to a 1-2 start under 11th-year head coach Bob Hoffman. A total of 10 newcomers joined the Bear program this offseason, including Djordje Dimitrijevic (team-best 12.7 points while coming off the bench in all three games).
In its last outing, Mercer came up short in a wild 62-60 road loss at in-state rival Georgia State on Tuesday. The Bears trailed by a 40-25 margin at the halftime break but had a chance to win the game before Dimitrijevic's potential game-winning three-point attempt was off target with four seconds left to play. Ethan Stair (12 points, nine rebounds) narrowly missed out on a double-double as Mercer won the rebounding battle 39-31 but allowed 15 three-pointers (11 in the first half).
