UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS DROPS 73-72 HEARTBREAKER AT IUPUI IN FINAL SECONDS
11/13/2018 9:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team nearly spoiled IUPUI's WNIT banner unveiling before a three-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining lifted the home squad to a 73-72 victory on Tuesday night.
The Skyhawks (2-1) dropped their first contest of the season despite leading for over 27 minutes of the contest and forcing the Jaguars into a season-high 22 turnovers. In spite of shooting just 38.4 percent from the floor and losing the battle of the boards, it was UT Martin which proved to be the aggressors throughout the contest – maintaining a full court trapping defense for 40 minutes.
UT Martin would hold a lead as large as seven points with just under four minutes to play in the fourth quarter before IUPUI began to make its move. A layup with 50 seconds to play would bring the Jaguars within two points before a three-pointer by Syndey Roule with 1.3 seconds to play proved to be the eventual game-winner.
The Skyhawks post trio of Damiah Griffin, Chelsey Perry and Maddie Waldrop each scored in double figures. Griffin posted a new career-high with 14 points – going 6-for-6 from the free throw line – while Perry tossed in 12 points. Waldrop came off the bench to tally 11 points and five rebounds while tying a career-high with a trio of three-pointers.
IUPUI (3-0) remained undefeated behind the play of explosive post player Macee Williams with 24 points and nine rebounds. Holly Hoopingarner tallied at 15 points and eight rebounds while Kateyn O'Reilly tossed in 13 points to round out the trifecta.
UT Martin will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 when playing host to Arkansas State. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
