
STRONG POST PLAY LIFTS UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS TO 97-91 WIN OVER ARKANSAS STATE

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team remained perfect at home with a balanced scoring attack which saw three forwards score in double figures to lift the Skyhawks to a 97-91 overtime victory over regional rival Arkansas State on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (3-1) won their third contest in the confines for the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center behind a strong pressure defense which forced 31 turnovers and converted 37 points off turnovers. UT Martin would limit Arkansas State to just 30 made field goals on the afternoon but the Red Wolves would keep themselves in the contest by making 30-of-45 free throw attempts after 33 fouls were called on the Skyhawks.
UT Martin would lead by as much as 15 points early in the second quarter while holding the game's scoring advantage for nearly 35 of the 45 minutes of play. While the Skyhawks would hold several double-digit leads in the contest, the Red Wolves would stay in the fight by either tying or trimming the margin to a single possession 13 times. With the game ultimately going into overtime, UT Martin would finally put the game away by outscoring ASU 11-5 in the extra period.
Junior Aundrea Adams tallied a new career-high with 21 points while notching five rebounds on the afternoon. Sophomore Chelsey Perry also tallied 21 points in the contest to equal the team lead while notching three blocks. Freshman Damiah Griffin became the third Skyhawk forward to eclipse double figures with 12 points and six rebounds in the contest.
"Today was a really good win for us," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. "That was a really good basketball team that we just played. I was impressed with our young kids for battling in overtime. For our kids to have the lead for 35 minutes, give it up in the last minute and still fight to find a way to win was huge. Hopefully we can find a way to build off of this."
Arkansas State (1-2) boasted a balanced offense which saw five players score in double figures. Peyton Martin led all scorers with dominating double-double performance with 27 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth. Akasha Westbrook (16), Morgan Wallace (13), Payton Tennison (11) and Jireh Washington (10) also scored in double figures for the Red Wolves.
UT Martin will return to action to close out the homestand with a matchup against Christian Brothers on Monday, Nov. 19. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 11 a.m. and serves as the program's annual Kid Game.
