MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team has broken into the No. 9 slot in the South Region of the latest edition of the United Soccer Coaches rankings. This marks the first time in program history that the Skyhawks have been ranked in the South Region rankings of the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
In the current rankings, UT Martin is keeping company with the likes of USF, Memphis, SMU, UCF, ECU and Florida Gulf Coast. Of all of the teams in the top-nine, the Skyhawks' 14-2-1 record is the best of the crop as they are just ahead of No. 2 Memphis (14-3-0). USF and Memphis are in the top-25 in the nation in the overall United Soccer Coaches poll.
Based upon each team's RPI, UT Martin has the third best among the aforementioned programs as the Skyhawks rank 65th while Memphis has been ranked at No. 17 and USF has been ranked at No. 22.
"We have waited a long time as a program for this first ever South Region ranking," head coach Phil McNamara said. "Credit to the players – they are breaking all sorts of records and have been simply phenomenal this season. I just hope we can keep the concentration and earn the right to win the OVC Tournament which we look forward to hosting the end of next week."
UT Martin has put together the best season in program history as the squad's 14 regular-season victories rank most all-time for the school, tying the 2011 team's 14 overall wins (postseason included). The 2018 Skyhawks have also set themselves up for a prime opportunity to tally additional wins this season as they have claimed the No. 1 seed in the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship and are set to host the semifinal and final rounds.
