MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team is ranked 75th in the nation, based on this week's edition of the NCAA RPI. The Skyhawks have also cracked into the top-10 in the nation in several offensive categories.
In the program's 20-year history, this marks the first time that UT Martin (12-2-1) has moved into the top-100 in the NCAA's RPI rankings. The Skyhawks find themselves ahead of teams in some of the country's premier soccer leagues such as Michigan, Washington, Missouri, Iowa, Villanova and Cincinnati all while being in the midst of a 10-match unbeaten streak and a perfect 7-0 at Skyhawk Field.
Ahead of UT Martin in the national rankings are No. 67 Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State (whom the Skyhawks toppled 3-1 earlier this season) and No. 14 Tennessee (whom the Skyhawks lost by a respectable 2-0 margin earlier in the year). UT Martin's .833 winning percentage is tied with North Carolina, South Florida and Santa Clara for the 15th-best winning percentage in NCAA Division-I soccer.
UT Martin ranks in the top-10 in the nation in four offensive categories. The Skyhawks rank fourth in total goals (40), fourth in shots on goal per match (9.80), fifth in scoring offense (2.67 goals per match) and seventh in shots per contest (19.87) among all 335 Division-I programs. While UT Martin has been standing out in the national stat line, the Skyhawks own the top spot in a total of 12 categories in the OVC.
Senior midfielder Amy McGivern has also found a place in the national spotlight as she ranks 10th in goals per match (0.85), 16th in total goals (11), 20th in points per contest (1.77), 21st in game-winning goals (four) and 37th in total points (23).
Sophomore goalkeeper Erica Myers also finds herself in good company as she ranks 28th nationally in goals against average (0.606) and 48th in shutouts (six).
"This late season ranking is simply fantastic for our program," head coach Phil McNamara said. "We are especially delighted for this group of seniors to achieve this best-ever honor. Credit to the players as they have played great soccer this entire season."
UT Martin looks to end the regular season strong as the Skyhawks host Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State this weekend. With one victory or one Murray State loss this weekend, UT Martin can clinch the program's fourth OVC regular season championship and claim home field advantage throughout the OVC Soccer Championship.
