MOREHEAD, Ky. – Senior libero Brooke Gyori amassed a career-best 34 digs for the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team but it wasn't enough as Morehead State defended its home court with a tight 3-1 win (25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22) this evening.
          Â
Gyori's 34 scoops were more than double the amount of any player on the court tonight, besting her previous career-high mark of 32 digs that was set on Sept. 28 at SIUE. She also contributed four assists and a match-high three service aces for the Skyhawks, who move to 8-12 overall and 2-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
          Â
Megan Fair flirted with a triple-double this evening, as the senior outside hitter registered a team-high 15 kills, 12 digs and a match-best eight blocks. Hannah Phillips added 11 kills while Kenzie Hinshaw and Maddi Noble handed out 23 and 15 assists, respectively. Jamie Rys (11 digs) and Gintare Mackeviciute (six blocks) also helped pace UT Martin defensively.
          Â
Morehead State (15-5, 6-1 OVC) opened up the first set on a 9-2 run before kills by Karen Scanlon, Phillips and Mackeviciute helped pull the Skyhawks within two points at 13-11. Fair accounted for three kills in the span of five rallies to keep UT Martin within striking distance late (20-18) before the Eagles scored the next four points on their way to a 1-0 lead in the match. Fair dialed up team-highs of three kills and five digs in the first set.
          Â
The Skyhawks led for a majority of the second stanza, taking a 6-3 lead thanks to an assisted block by Justine Walker and Fair. UT Martin soon reeled off a 5-0 run which included three consecutive assisted blocks by the Skyhawk tandem of Mackeviciute and Fair. UT Martin led by as many as eight points before Walker put the finishing touches on the set with a kill. Fair (five kills, four blocks) and Gyori (10 digs) helped the Skyhawks even the match at 1-all.
          Â
An extended UT Martin surge midway through the third set nearly changed the momentum of the match before Morehead State held on for the win. Fair was responsible for three early kills but the Eagles took a 16-6 lead to begin the stanza. The Skyhawks then scored 10 of the next 11 points and eventually evened the score at 18-all after a Gyori service ace. Two more ties would follow but Morehead State closed out the set on a 5-2 run. Gyori made plays all over the court in the third stanza, tallying a remarkable 15 digs throughout the set.
          Â
The score was 7-3 in favor of the Eagles in the fourth set but UT Martin clawed its way back to a 13-12 advantage. Back-to-back service aces by Gyori capped off a 5-0 Skyhawk run while a Walker kill kept the UT Martin lead intact at 17-16. However, Morehead State struck right back for a 5-0 run and despite back-to-back kills by Phillips late, the Skyhawks couldn't get any closer than two points the rest of the way. Phillips had four of the team's 10 kills in the fourth set.
          Â
UT Martin looks to bounce back quickly with a Thursday, Oct. 11 matchup at OVC rival Eastern Kentucky. First serve from Richmond, Ky. is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST.
