MARTIN, Tenn. – After a brief one-match homestand, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team heads back on the road this week for two Ohio Valley Conference showdowns. The Skyhawks clash with Morehead State on Wednesday, Oct. 10 before trekking to Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Oct. 11. Both matches will begin at 5 p.m. CST.
Â
UT Martin (8-11, 2-4 OVC) will look to get back in the win column after a pair of four-set losses last week against Southeast Missouri (23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 18-25) and Jacksonville State (21-25, 26-24, 17-25, 24-26). Hannah Phillips keyed the Skyhawk offense with 3.50 kills per set on a .373 attack percentage in the two matches, including a career-best 15 kills last Friday against Jacksonville State. Brooke Gyori (3.75 digs per set), Justine Walker (1.25 blocks per set) and Gintare Mackeviciute (1.25 blocks per set) paced UT Martin defensively last week.
Â
The Skyhawks boast a trio of players in the OVC's top-10 of attack percentage in league play. Freshman Karen Scanlon ranks atop the conference with a .373 clip while Mackeviciute (.327, fourth) and Phillips (.305, ninth) also represent UT Martin. Walker (1.20) and Mackeviciute (1.15) rank second and third, respectively, in blocks per set against OVC competition. Gyori (second with 4.84 digs per set) and Kenzie Hinshaw (third with 0.36 service aces per set, eighth with 8.38 assists per set) each rank amongst the OVC's best in overall statistics.
Â
The Skyhawks have won three of their last four matches against Morehead State, including 3-0 road sweeps in 2016 and 2014. This year's Eagles are 14-5 overall (5-1 OVC) and are one of the top defensive squads in the OVC, as they lead the conference in opponent hitting percentage (.151) and blocks (2.34 per set). Olivia Lohmeier's 3.33 kills per set are a team-high while Jessie Wachtman (.328 hitting percentage), Danielle McCarson (0.49 service aces per set) and Maddie Fella (1.55 blocks per set) lead the OVC in their respective statistical categories.
Â
Eastern Kentucky (3-15, 2-4 OVC) started off league play with back-to-back wins before falling in each of its last four decisions, including a pair of road setbacks at Tennessee State (3-0) and Belmont (3-1) last weekend. Cassie Knutson's average of 4.30 kills per set in OVC competition is good enough for second in the league rankings while Chloe Rojas' 4.55 overall digs per set comes in as the third-best mark in the conference.
