MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin head men's basketball coach Jeremy Shulman has announced the signing of Mai Hong, a 6-2, 200-pound freshman guard out of China.
Hong prepped at the Hoosac School in New York, averaging 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per outing last season in the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) – one of the most competitive high school basketball leagues in the country. He helped the Owls make a run to the NEPSAC AAA Finals last season while playing for head coach Aleks Miljenovic.
"Mai brings a great culture piece to our program," Shulman said. "He's someone that loves the game and wants to get better. He is a great shooter and will be a great locker room presence as well."
Prior to his time at the Hoosac School, Hong played at Tsinghua University High School in his hometown of Beijing, China. He accounted for a standout career, helping lead the squad to the Chinese High School Basketball League runner-up finish in 2025. He is the latest in a long line of strong basketball products from the school as Tsinghua has won 14 CHBL championships since 2003 (by far the most in the league).
Hong is the 10th Skyhawk commit for the 2026-27 season, which comes a year after UT Martin tied a school record with 22 wins en route to its third Ohio Valley Conference Championship semifinals berth in the last four seasons. The Skyhawks ranked in the top-25 in the country in seven different statistical categories, including a top-10 ranking in scoring defense (63.2 points per game, third), three-point percentage defense (.292, fourth), field goal percentage defense (.390, sixth) and offensive rebounds per game (13.88, eighth).
Hong is set to join Reid Conley (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Armandas Bancevicius (Kaunas, Lithuania), Gabrielius Bubnys (Marijampolė, Lithuania), Nikola Janicic (Skopje, North Macedonia), Giorgi Sulaberidze (Kutaisi, Georgia), Davi Remagen (Köln, Germany), Nikas Stuknys (Panevėžys, Lithuania), Sasha Savkov (Moscow, Russia) and Kaan Onat (Istanbul, Turkey) as UT Martin newcomers in 2026-27.
