Â
Every Skyhawk reached base safely in the contest with TJ Grines (home run, double, two stolen bases, three RBIs, four runs scored), TJ Dunsford (two RBIs), JT Popick (three RBIs, two doubles), Tommy Koch (run scored) and Garner Anderson (three runs scored, stolen base) all having two hits in the game.
Â
Maxwell Schumacher threw 3.1 innings during the start with one strikeout while Will Turner (2.1 innings, three strikeouts), Gabe Bryant (2-3, 2.1 innings) and Mason Little (one inning) pitched in relief.
Â
After a scoreless first from the right-hander Schumacher, Grines came to the plate to lead off the home half and the first pitch he saw he launched off the scoreboard in left field for UT Martin (25-26, 10-14 Ohio Valley Conference) to grab a 1-0 lead.
Â
Schumacher tossed back-to-back spotless innings in the second and third for the Skyhawks to maintain their 1-0 advantage. UT Martin loaded the base in the bottom of the third and capitalized with Colten Payton plating the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center field. An error allowed Anderson to score from third, then Dunsford brought in Grines by way of a single to third base. Popick capped off a five-run frame on a two-run double down the left field line that got the Skyhawks a 6-0 lead.
Â
The Trojans (30-22) used a big fourth inning to pull in front, but the UT Martin offense responded with two runs from a Grines double and Lawrence single to end the frame. Turner held Little Rock scoreless in the fifth during his first full inning of work with two flyball outs and a punchout.
Â
The Skyhawks tied the game at 10 all in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cameron Greene (two-run home run) homered for the second straight game. Grines got UT Martin the lead after reaching on an error that scored Anderson. With two outs, Payton doubled in Grines and Dunsford put the Skyhawks up by three on his second RBI single of the game.
Â
The contest was tied again after the top of the sixth and both teams would go scoreless until the Trojans claimed a one-run lead in the eighth. Once again, UT Martin had a counter punch ready, this time it was Popick who scored Andrew Davis on a two-out RBI double.
Â
Despite the valiant effort by the Skyhawks, Little Rock scored two runs in the ninth and were able to hold on for the win.
Â
UT Martin begins the final week of the regular season with a trip to #20 Ole Miss on Tuesday, May 12 at 6 p.m.
