Skyhawks Fall To Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell 10-3 to Southern Indiana in the series finale at USI Baseball Field.
TJ Grines went 3-5 on the day with two singles, two stolen bases, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Andrew Lawrence had a base knock while Andrew Davis (two walks), Colten Payton (walk) and Amari Conley (walk) also reached base safely.
Maxwell Schumacher (2-4) threw three innings and fanned two batters in the start. Out of the bullpen, Silas Jones (1.2 innings, one strikeout), Gehrig Wright (1.1 innings, no runs, one strikeout), Will Turner (one inning, one strikeout) and Gabe Bryant (one inning) recorded outings.
Schumacher was able to leave two stranded in the first and pitch a scoreless frame after inducing two flyball outs and a lineout. Southern Indiana (22-18, 6-9 Ohio Valley Conference) got on the board in the bottom of the second and added on runs in the following innings.
Wright was able to escape a bases loaded jam in the fifth and Grines manufactured a run for UT Martin (19-20, 6-9 OVC) by scoring on a throwing error after stealing third in the sixth. Once again, Wright stranded three Screaming Eagles on the base paths this time in the bottom of the sixth, and then Turner tossed a scoreless seventh. Conley led off the eighth with a walk and in the next at bat Grines hammered a ball over the center field wall to cut the Skyhawk deficit down to three.
Despite UT Martin building momentum in the eighth inning, Southern Indiana pulled away in the home half and secured the win in the ninth.
UT Martin returns home on Tuesday, April 21 at 5 p.m. to host Belmont.
