EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth inning but fell 4-2 to Southern Indiana at USI Baseball Field.
Andrew Lawrence (double) and JT Popick (RBI) paced UT Martin (19-19, 6-8 Ohio Valley Conference) in hits while TJ Dunsford (RBI) and Colten Payton also recorded base knocks for the Skyhawk offense.
Cason Sharp (2-4) established a new season-high in strikeouts with seven over six innings of work on the bump. Will Turner (one inning, two strikeouts) and Gabe Bryant (one inning, one strikeout) didn't allow a run in relief appearances.
Southern Indiana (21-18, 5-9 OVC) took the lead in the first but left the bases loaded after Sharp induced a popout to his third basemen Cameron Greene. The Screaming Eagles added on to their lead in the third, but Sharp held them scoreless in the next frame with a flyout, punchout and groundout. The junior then pitched a hitless fifth and added on another strikeout.
The righty Sharp ended his outing by stranding a runner on first with back-to-back strikeouts in the home half of the sixth. Turner entered for the seventh and recorded three straight outs after surrendering a lead-off single. Bryant took over in the eighth and tossed another zero on the board for the pitching staff by retiring Southern Indiana on a popout, groundout and strikeout.
With two runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth, Dunsford delivered a single that allowed Payton to score from third and put runners at the corners. Popick lofted a base hit to right to plate Lawrence and make it 4-2. UT Martin would bring the tying run to the plate with runners on first and third, but its comeback attempt fell short in the ninth.
The Skyhawks and Screaming Eagles meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the rubber match.
