
Charlie Jahr Selected As UT Martin’s Hoops For Heroes Representative

MARTIN, Tenn. – It was announced today that Charlie Jahr will be recognized as the University of Tennessee at Martin's Hoops For Heroes ambassador at the upcoming 2026 Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship tournament at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
Jahr will be honored during an on-court ceremony prior the men's finals session on Saturday, March 7. Jahr becomes the 14th Skyhawk representative in the OVC Hoops For Heroes initiative, joining Lloyd Thomas (2025), Roy Wiley (2023), Chuck Hammer (2022), Joe Exum (2020), Marcus VanCleave (2019), Led Symmes (2018), Terry Ward (2017), Corey Scates (2016), Ed Baker (2015), Jenny Harrison (2014), Wayne Alexander (2013), Vincent Newsome (2012) and Col. Bill Kaler (2011).
The Hoops For Heroes project began by honoring veterans from OVC communities that served in the military and has expanded to also salute first responders. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) from each OVC institution selects an honoree and invites them to the OVC Basketball Championship tournament as a reward for sacrificing so much for our freedom.
Jahr has worked at UT Martin for two decades and is currently in his third year as the university's Safety and Emergency Management Coordinator. In that role, he develops, implements and maintains comprehensive campus emergency management and safety programs are in alignment with federal, state and local regulations. Other duties include coordinating emergency preparedness planning, leading campus emergency response efforts, serving as a liaison with local emergency management/law enforcement/fire departments/public health agencies and conducing risk assessments, safety audits and inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with OSHA, fire codes and institutional policies.
A Martin, Tenn. native, Jahr previously worked 17 years as a police officer with the UT Martin Department of Public Safety. He was promoted to sergeant in 2013 and also served as operations/training commander and a general department instructor over his final seven years in the department.
Jahr earned his bachelor's degree in university studies from UT Martin in 2006 and graduated with a Master's degree in criminal justice from UT Martin in 2023. He also obtained a graduate certificate in emergency management from UT Martin in 2024.
Both Skyhawk squads will be in action this week at the OVC Basketball Championships. The women's team nabbed the No. 6 seed and will play at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 while the men claimed the No. 4 seed and will open its tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.
