SAINT CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team scored three goals in the second half of Thursday's match at Lindenwood and en route to its first victory of the season, 4-2.
The Lions struck first just 23 seconds into the match on a breakaway goal from MacKenzie Compton. However, in the 32nd minute, Alexandra Weihs sent in a cross from the left corner that found the head of Ava Huntrods, who directed the ball into the goal to tie the game at one.
Just when it looked like the two teams would go into the half tied, Lindenwood was awarded a penalty kick on a handball in the penalty area and buried it in the lower left corner to take a 2-1 lead.
While the first half belonged to the Lions, the second half was all UT Martin. Peyton Cook got the three-goal half started for the Skyhawks in the 48th minute when she snuck one past the Lions' keeper to knot the game at two all.
In the 66th minute, Anna Ostergaard Ibsen scored off a pass from Addy McCleary to give the Skyhawks their first lead of the match at 3-2. Finally, in the 74th minute, Peyton Cook earned her brace by scoring again, this time on a play set up by Audrey Fuchs.
The four goals Thursday doubled the scoring output of the season for UT Martin, taking their season total from two to six. The Skyhawks outshot Lindenwood in the match, 18-17, and also placed more shots on target at 7-6. Cook led all players in the match with five total shots, three on target and two goals.
Despite the two goals, Mac Titus ended the match with four saves to earn her first win of the season.
On Sunday, UT Martin returns to action at home when it hosts Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m.
