MARTIN, Tenn. – After a narrow 1-0 loss Thursday at Ole Miss, the University of Tennessee at Martin Soccer team will look to rebound from its first loss of the season Sunday when it hosts Illinois State at Skyhawk Soccer Field at 2 p.m. Sunday will be the first-ever meeting between the Skyhawks and the Redbirds.
UT Martin mostly survived a barrage of shots by Ole Miss Thursday, but a Rebel goal in the 21st minute ultimately sealed the game, dealing the Skyhawks a 1-0 loss, their first of the season, Thursday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex in Oxford.
While Ole Miss ended the match with 18 shots, they struggled to put them on target, with only five finding the goal. However, one shot that found its mark came in the 21st minute from Tate Blincoe, which slipped past UT Martin's Mac Titus and proved to be all the scoring the Rebels needed in the match.
The Ole Miss defense proved equally as effective as its offense in the match, holding the Skyhawks to just three shots. However, the shot selection for the Skyhawks was on point as two of the three shots were on target, with shots on goal from Unni Wolf and Allie Buchman.
Titus made four saves on the night in the first 80 minutes, while Jordyn Riffle kept the Rebels off the board in the last 10 minutes of action.
Illinois State enters Sunday after picking up its first win of the season at home Thursday, a 5-0 shutout of Western Illinois. The Redbirds got goals from Eve Gricius, Chloe Cline, Danica Key, Elyse Deschryver in the match, while Kaya Durkee had two assists. Katie Nonn and Madi Valenti split the clean sheet in the match, with each keeper playing 45 minutes and Nonn making the lone save of the match for Illinois State.
The Redbirds currently average 1.6 goals per match, while allowing 1.8. Cline currently leads Illinois State in scoring with two goals, while Durkee and Erika Wells have two assists each. Valenti has seen all but 45 minutes in goal for the Redbirds this season and is allowing 2.0 goals per match to go along with 4.2 saves.
