MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team begins a four-game homestand this weekend with a three-game set against Ohio Valley Conference foe Southern Indiana. Game 1 is slated for Friday, May 2 at 5 p.m. while Game 2 is set for Saturday, May 3 at 3 p.m. The series finale will take place Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
Â
UT Martin (16-27, 7-10 OVC) leads the league in stolen bases (92) while ranking among the conference's best in triples (second, 12) and fewest home runs allowed (second, 42). In OVC play, the Skyhawks are batting a crisp .295 (third) and place fourth in hits (182) and saves (six).
Â
Arderrius Townsend has upped his slugging percentage against league foes to .702 (fourth in OVC) and Brody Capps' 42 RBIs on the year are good enough for the third-most in the conference. Jalen Fithian's 27 stolen bases (first in OVC) and 13 doubles (fourth in OVC) have made the outfielder a major threat in the UT Martin batting order.
Â
Junior left-hander Zach Wager boasts a 3.58 ERA which is sixth-best in OVC play and righty Jacob Sitton has fanned nine batters looking against conference foes (ninth in OVC). Jeb Bartle's three saves in league play (tenth in OVC) and 42:13 strikeout to walk ratio have made him a solid arm out of the bullpen. Freshman JP Nunn (3.78 ERA) and junior Kaleb Baskin (20:7 strikeout to walk ratio) continue to build quality performances for the Skyhawks.
Â
Southern Indiana (20-24, 9-9 OVC) brings in the top offense in the conference as the Screaming Eagles lead the league in batting average (.311), hits (491) and rank second in on-base percentage (.397). Sophomore Parker Martin owns the third-best batting average in the conference (.378) while reigning OVC Player of the Week Cameron Boyd is coming off a five-game stretch where he hit .583 (14-24), blasted three home runs, drove in 12 RBIs and scored eight runs. Pitcher Andres Gonzales pairs a .231 opposing batting average with 29 punchouts which is sixth in OVC play.
Â
UT Martin will start the junior Sitton (1-3, 5.40 ERA) on Friday night and Southern Indiana will roll with junior righty Blake Kimball (5-4, 5.90). For Saturday, Wager (5-5, 4.35) will toe the rubber against the Eagle's junior left-hander Jake Porter (2-4, 5.88). In the series finale Southern Indiana is expected to start the junior righty Gonzales (0-4, 5.36) while the Skyhawks starter is to be announced.
