Every player in the lineup recorded a hit with Brody Capps driving in a team-best three RBIs to add with his two hits and home run. Blaze Bell (two hits), Jonah Katsaboulas (two RBIs, run scored) and Cameron Greene (double, stolen base) drove in runs while Jalen Fithian (double, one walk, three stolen bases, run scored), Garner Anderson (two walks, two runs scored), Arderrius Townsend (stolen base, two walks, run scored), JT Popick (stolen base, run scored) and Tommy Koch (double, two walks, run scored) added on base knocks to help UT Martin (12-18, 3-4 Ohio Valley Conference) outhit the Panthers, 11-6.
Jacob Sitton started the day on the bump going five innings with Zach Wager (3-4, three innings pitched, one hit allowed, no runs) and Jeb Bartle (save, one inning pitched, no runs, no walks) entering the game out of the bullpen.
Eastern Illinois (12-15, 4-3 OVC) rattled off five runs in the first two innings, then Sitton held the Panthers hitless in the third by recording an out on a sacrifice bunt which was accompanied by a pop out and flyout to end the frame.
Back-to-back doubles by Koch and Greene got the Skyhawks on the board, and a second consecutive no-hit inning by Sitton gave the road team momentum heading into the fourth. Another UT Martin run was added off a successful double steal that scored Popick and got Greene to second base. The righty Sitton dealt with two runners aboard in the home half and sent them back to the dugout by prompting a flyout to centerfield.
Three runs on four hits tied the contest up at five when Katsaboulas and Bell tallied run-scoring singles that created a brand-new ballgame in the top of the fifth. Sitton finished his day with a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom part of the inning off a groundout and two flyouts in a row.
Wager entered for Sitton in the sixth and after a leadoff single, recorded three straight outs on a flyout, pick off and groundout. The Panthers would get one more base hit for the remainder of the game.
During the seventh, Wager scored a strikeout to start the inning and two flyouts to conclude a fifth consecutive scoreless frame for the Skyhawk pitching staff. The southpaw was efficient in the eighth by putting Eastern Illinois down in order from a strikeout and two more flyouts.
Fithian drew a leadoff walk to start the ninth and proceeded to steal second then nabbed third after Anderson walked. Capps came up to the dish with the game hanging in the balance and rocked a no-doubter to left field that gave UT Martin its first lead of the day, 8-5.
Capps added to his day in the ninth on an unassisted double play by the first baseman. Bartle put the finishing touches on the win by punching out the final batter of the game for his second save of the season.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was postponed to tomorrow with Game 1 of the twin bill starting at 10 a.m. and Game 2 beginning at 1:30 p.m.
