COOKEVILLE, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team battled but fell 7-6 to Tennessee Tech in the series finale at Bush Stadium.
Â
JT Popick (two RBIs, two runs scored) had a career-high four hits while Frank Micallef (three-run homer), Blaze Bell (run scored), Cameron Greene and Jordan Hudson had base knocks. Brody Capps and Jonah Katsaboulas (two walks) were able to score runs for the Skyhawks (16-26, 7-10 Ohio Valley Conference).
Â
Brandon King toed the rubber to start the day for UT Martin going 3.1 innings. Austin Gast (2.2 innings), Mason Shropshire (one inning, no runs allowed) and Kaleb Baskin (2-2, no walks allowed) made appearances out of the bullpen.
Â
King started the first inning in 1-2-3 fashion forcing a strikeout, groundout and line out to centerfield. Popick put a single up the middle to get the scoring going and give the Skyhawks the lead 1-0 in the top of the second. The Golden Eagles (28-17, 11-7 OVC) were able to take the lead in the home half.
Â
The righty King worked a clean third frame with two flyouts and a groundout to keep the score the same. After a Katsaboulas walk and Popick single, Micallef lifted off to left center for his first UT Martin home run that gave the Skyhawks the lead, 4-3. King and Gast combined for a scoreless fourth with a pop out and two flyouts.
Â
One base hit would be all that Tennessee Tech could muster up in the fifth as Gast kept UT Martin in front on a foul out, pop out and groundout. Popick scored on an error to extend the lead to two, but the Golden Eagles cut their deficit back down to one in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Popick sent his fourth single into center field which got the lead back to two and Shropshire got an inning-ending double play in the home half of the seventh for a scoreless outing. Tennessee Tech went on to take the lead in the eighth and fended off the Skyhawks in the ninth to secure the win.
Â
UT Martin heads to North Alabama on Tuesday, April 29 with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
