COOKEVILLE, Tenn.- In a back-and-forth battle, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team came up just short against Tennessee Tech with the Golden Eagles winning 6-5 on a walk-off in the 10th inning.
Â
Three Skyhawks had two-hit games with Jalen Fithian (solo home run, stolen base), Blaze Bell (run scored) and Arderrius Townsend (two-run homer, double, two RBIs). Jonah Katsaboulas (double) and JT Popick (one walk) plated runs while Brody Capps (base hit), Jordan Hudson (run scored), Frank Micallef (walk, base hit) and Cameron Greene (base hit) also made contributions to the UT Martin offense.
Â
Jacob Sitton started on the bump going five innings with one strikeout and relief appearances were made by Mason Shropshire (one inning, one strikeout, no hits) and Jeb Bartle (0-3, 3.2 innings, five strikeouts, no earned runs).
Â
Sitton started his day with a flawless first inning, sitting Tennessee Tech (27-16, 10-6 Ohio Valley Conference) down in order. UT Martin (15-25, 6-9 OVC) would take the lead in the second on a no-doubt shot over the left field wall from Townsend. Sitton worked out of a bases loaded jam in the home half by inducing a groundout to short.
Â
Townsend added on with an RBI double in the third inning and scored on the next play when Katsaboulas doubled down the left field line. Sitton forced a 4-6-3 inning ending double play to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard in the bottom part of the frame. A leadoff double would be all Tennessee Tech could conjure up in the fourth as Sitton worked through the next three batters in order by way of a groundout, strikeout looking and pop out.
Â
The Golden Eagles scored their first two runs of the game in the fifth before being kept off the scoreboard by Shropshire in the sixth. The Skyhawks stretched their lead to two on a rocket off the bat of Fithian that made the score 4-2. Tennessee Tech was able to get the run back in the home half as it would be a one-run ball game heading into the eighth.
Â
The Golden Eagles tied things up on a single in the eighth but couldn't bring home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth after Bartle posted two strikeouts to force extra innings. Popick came through in the clutch by taking a single through the right side of the infield that scored Hudson and gave UT Martin a one-run lead heading into the 10th.
Â
Tennessee Tech would then use back-to-back run scoring singles to walk it off and win Game 1 of the weekend series.
Â
The Skyhawks aim to even the series up tomorrow at 2 p.m.
