YOUNGSVILLE, La. – It was a busy day for the University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball squad at the Sugar Beach Bash as the Skyhawks wrapped up the day with two victories in the tournament hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.
The schedule was adjusted for all teams to play three games today before expected inclement weather hit the area tomorrow afternoon. UT Martin was only one point shy of sweeping all three matches, falling 3-2 to a tough Tulane team before bouncing back to defeat Spring Hill (3-2) and Southeastern Louisiana (4-1).
All five Skyhawk pairs earned at least one victory today while Sydney Eckhardt/Reagan McGee went a perfect 3-0 out of the No. 4 slot in the lineup. Dylan Mott/Jenna Vallée (No. 1) and Kayla Bryant/Olivia O'Keefe (No. 3) also collected two wins apiece with both victories for the latter coming in match-clinching fashion.
Matched up against a Green Wave squad that is 13-4 and receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top-20 poll, UT Martin pushed Tulane to the limit before barely falling. Eckhardt/McGee got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard with a 21-18, 21-15 victory while Mott/Vallée later secured an impressive 18-21, 21-19, 15-13 triumph. However, UT Martin was edged out on the other three decisions.
Having to immediately turn around and play the second match of a back-to-back, the Skyhawks recovered for a 3-2 victory over the Badgers. Once again, Eckhardt/McGee gave UT Martin its first point of the match with a 21-11, 26-24 win. Ryan Rednour/Kylie Surratt followed with a 21-16, 21-10 triumph at No. 5 before the match was tied at 2-all. With all eyes moving to the No. 3 matchup, Bryant/O'Keefe stood tall for a 21-16, 21-14 victory to seal the win.
In the nightcap, the Skyhawks defeated the Lady Lions for the second time this spring – also knocking off Southeastern Louisiana back on Feb. 28 in Baton Rouge, La. For the third time today, Eckhardt/McGee accounted for UT Martin's opening point of the match via a 21-17, 21-12 triumph – improving to 6-0 together in the process. Riley Rushing/Dylan Sulcer followed with an impressive 21-12, 15-21, 17-15 victory at No. 2 before the team-best seventh win of the season for Bryant/O'Keefe (21-17, 21-11). Mott/Vallée tacked on another victory for good measure via scores of 21-17, 21-12.
Tomorrow's schedule has been abbreviated to one match as the Skyhawks will take on New Orleans at 9 a.m.
