MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in nearly a dozen weeks, the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team will compete in an official capacity when the Skyhawks open their spring schedule with a pair of meets. UT Martin will travel to Auburn, Ala. for a matchup against Eastern College Athletic Conference rival Minnesota-Crookston tomorrow before facing No. 1 Auburn on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Ranked No. 9 in the last four NCEA top-10 polls, the Skyhawks enter the spring semester with a 4-3 overall record and 4-0 mark against conference foes. Minnesota-Crookston is the fifth of six ECAC matchups on UT Martin's 2024-25 slate while Auburn will be the fourth ranked opponent for the Skyhawks this season. That list includes a 14-6 home setback to the same Tiger squad back on Oct. 26 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
That aforementioned loss to Auburn was the last time that UT Martin has experienced defeat as the Skyhawks concluded the fall on a two-meet winning streak against ECAC opponents. UT Martin knocked off South Dakota State (12-4) and Delaware State (11-9) on Nov. 15-16, leaping up to No. 9 in the national rankings 10 days later.
The Skyhawks racked up their most wins (22) in reining during the fall schedule while UT Martin also added 20 head-to-head victories in horsemanship, 17 in flat and 15 in fences. The Skyhawks piled up 17 MOP honorees (six reining, five flat, four horsemanship, two fences).
In reining, Elise Mason and Logan Putvinski each posted a team-high six wins apiece while Mason and Lexi Bailey both earned a pair of MOP medals. The trio of Bailey, Lillian Laney and Mia McAfoos top UT Martin with five horsemanship wins apiece while Bailey and McAfoos both secured two MOP's apiece. Gabby Adams paces the Skyhawks in flat triumphs (six) and MOP's (three) while Elizabeth Becker (team-highs of five wins and one MOP) and Emerson Maier (team-best one MOP) lead the way for UT Martin in fences.
