Skyhawk Road Struggles Continue Against Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football program hoped with the switch to OVC-Big South Football Association action that its road woes would be left in the rearview mirror, but a trip to Association foe Lindenwood resulted in another 30-14 setback.
The Skyhawks (1-5, 1-1 OVC-Big South) struggled to find their footing in the contest with a pair of scoreless quarters before finding the endzone in both the second and fourth periods. A 17-yard touchdown run by Jase Bauer tied the game up early in the second quarter before Lindenwood came out of the half and pushed its margin out to as large as 23 points. With the final seconds ticking away, the Skyhawks were able to execute a two-minute drill and find the endzone once again as Shawn Hardy II tapped a toe in the endzone to cut into the final margin.
UT Martin was limited to just 298 yards of total offense while racking up 20 first downs but 90 penalty yards proved to be costly. Bauer wrapped up his day by going 17-of-22 while throwing for 124 yards and rushing for 32 more to pace the Skyhawks. Backup Julian Calvez orchestrated a scoring drive late in the fourth quarter as he completed 9-of-12 pass attempts for 44 yards and a touchdown – finding Hardy four times down the stretch – including the touchdown connection.
Defensively, Keyshawn Johnson paced the team with eight total tackles while Tah Mac Bright Banda added six tackles to his line. Unfortunately, the squad could not wrap up Lindenwood in the backfield as they recorded zero tackles for loss. Toby Camp was impressive on the defensive line with four tackles but created havoc with a pair of blocks on special teams.
"Give them credit, they have a good team and their quarterback is a good player," UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. "They made more plays than we did and coached better. When you go on the road you have to play better. A couple calls didn't go our way and we have to be able to fight through that, but we just didn't find a way today."
Lindenwood (3-3, 2-0 OVC-Big South) was led by quarterback Nate Glantz who racked up 321 yards of total offense after completing 12-of-17 pass attempts for 227 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 91 yards on the ground while Steve Hall found the endzone on the rushing attack. The receiving trio of Jalen Smith, Drew Krobath and Rico Bond each tallied touchdown receptions while Smith paced the group with three catches for 146 yards.
UT Martin returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when playing host to OVC-Big South foe Western Illinois for the program's annual Homecoming contest.
