LUBBOCK, Tex.- The College Baseball Foundation announced its watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award and University of Tennessee at Martin standout Andrew Fernandez was named to the elite group.
Â
A total of 100 players were chosen as finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, which honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. The honor is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977-80 before passing away of leukemia at the age of 27.
Â
Fernandez is four of three Ohio Valley Conference shortstops on the prestigious list, joining Morehead State's Colton Becker, Western Illinois' Trevor Leon and Eastern Illinois' Lucas Loos. Fernandez is the first Skyhawk to be recognized on this list since Casey Harford in 2021.
Â
A senior from Kissimmee, Fla., Fernandez holds a .316 batting average with nine doubles, a pair of triples, five home runs, 32 RBI's and 32 runs scored. He boasts a .901 OPS (.404 on-base percentage plus .497 slugging percentage) with 13 multi-hit contests and eight multi-RBI performances at the dish. Defensively, he committed only five errors this spring.
Â
Fernandez has been one of the best players in the OVC since joining the UT Martin program in 2023. The 5-8, 187-pound switch hitter has hit .333 with 129 hits, 30 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 85 RBI's and 74 runs scored in 94 contests. He has boasted a .533 slugging percentage and reached base at a .398 clip.
Â
Fernandez and the Skyhawks will be looking for the series win against Tennessee Tech today at 3 p.m.
