MARTIN, Tenn. – The three-time defending regular season champion University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball squad looks to add another ring to their collection this week when it travels to the 2024 Ohio Valley Conference Championship held at Giovanni's Breadstick Beach on the campus of Morehead State University.
The Skyhawks (15-15) sewed up their third straight OVC regular season championship last Saturday, capping off a 9-1 conference season with a pair of wins against Tennessee Tech and Lindenwood. Although UT Martin finished in a tie atop the league standings with Chattanooga, the Skyhawks earned the No. 1 seed in the OVC Championship tournament because they won six of the 10 head-to-head decisions against the Mocs during the regular season.
UT Martin claims a first-round bye into the three-day, 10-match OVC Championship event, which begins on Thursday, April 25. The Skyhawks will make their tournament debut at 1 p.m. CT that day, taking on the winner of the 10 a.m. match featuring No. 4 seed Morehead State and No. 5 seed Tennessee Tech.
Four more matches take place on Friday, April 26 before three teams make it to the final day on Saturday, April 27. After a match at 8 a.m. CT, two sides will battle in a winner-take-all showdown at 11 a.m. CT for the right to represent the OVC as its automatic qualifier in the NCAA Tournament.
UT Martin is 9-2 all-time in the OVC Championship tournament and has won six straight decisions heading into the 2024 edition of the event. The Skyhawks will be returning to the site where they won their first-ever OVC Championship tournament trophy in 2022.
During league play this spring, UT Martin won a whopping 84 percent (42-8 record) of its head-to-head decisions. That included an unblemished 10-0 mark out of the No. 5 slot, which was exclusively filled by Kayla Carrell/Reagan McGee. The Skyhawks went 9-1 at both the No. 2 (led by an 8-0 effort from Sydney Eckhardt/Dylan Mott) and No. 3 (solely occupied by Ryan Rednour/Addy Vaughn) while posting an 8-2 mark at No. 4, thanks in large part to an 8-1 record from Haeleigh Paulino/Kristin Phillips. Consistently matched up against the best the competition has to offer, UT Martin's No. 1 pairing of Olivia O'Keefe/Jenna Vallée went 6-3 together while the team as a whole went 6-4 out of that position in the lineup.
