MARTIN, Tenn. – Eight teams and 48 golfers from Ohio Valley Conference schools will take part in the third annual Carpenter/Chaney Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin and Morehead State University on Monday, April 1 through Tuesday, April 2.
This year's event will take place at the Country Club of Paducah, a par-72 course playing at 7,014 yards in Paducah, Ky. This will mark the second time in the last 17 months that the Skyhawks have played an event on this course, which was built in 1984 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. UT Martin also faced off in a one-day, 18-hole match play event against Western Kentucky in October 2022.
The Skyhawks won the inaugural Carpenter/Chaney Classic in Tunica, Miss. in 2022 before placing first in their group in the 2023 event held in Mims, Fla. The 54-hole match-play event is named after legendary Ohio Valley Conference head golf coaches Jerry Carpenter (UT Martin from 2002-20) and Dr. Rex Chaney (Morehead State from 1976-2014). That duo combined for five OVC championships and six OVC Coach of the Year awards while overseeing six OVC Championship medalists and four OVC Golfers of the Year.
Eight OVC teams are appearing in the 2024 field with first-round matchups being determined by Spikemark national team rankings. After practice rounds on Sunday, March 31, Monday's morning schedule includes No. 1 seed SIUE against No. 8 seed Eastern Illinois, the No. 2 seed Skyhawks against No. 7 seed Tennessee State, No. 3 seed Southern Indiana against No. 6 seed Morehead State and No. 4 seed Tennessee Tech against No. 5 seed Lindenwood.
Each team will play three matches with a winner's side and a consolation bracket after the opening round. Following the aforementioned matches which will begin with split tees at 8 a.m., Round 2 will take place with split tees at approximately 1 p.m. The third and final round tees off at 8:30 a.m. off Hole No. 1 on Tuesday.
Monday's forecast calls for cloudy skies, a high of 78 degrees, low of 62 degrees and 12 mile-per-hour southwest winds. Tuesday's weather is projected for a high of 66 degrees, low of 41 degrees, 17 mile-per-hour winds out of the west with a 50 percent chance of rain showers.
UT Martin's lineup for this event will include Luke Caldwell, Dax Isbell, Grant Phillips, Ethan Ray, Jacob Uehlein and Jonathan Xoinis. Four Skyhawks – Xoinis (4-0-1), Uehlein (4-0-1), Ray (2-1) and Isbell (2-1) – have experience in the first two editions of the Carpenter/Chaney Classic while Caldwell and Phillips will be making their tournament debuts.
