NO. 2 SEED IS ON THE LINE AS UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS HOSTS TSU FOR WE BACK PACK GAME
3/1/2024 4:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team heads into the final game of the regular season with one final hurdle in front of them en route to the No. 2 seed in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Championship when playing host to Tennessee State on Saturday, March 2. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is slated for 1 p.m. with fans encouraged to wear white.
In addition to UT Martin welcoming back its basketball and cheer alumni, the Skyhawks will also recognize two departing seniors in guard Sydneey Boykin and manager Ally Smith in a pregame ceremony. The game also serves as We Back Pat Day with UT Martin honoring former basketball standout and legendary head coach Pat Head Summitt's legacy while promoting Alzheimer's awareness.
The Skyhawks (14-14, 11-6 OVC) head into the final game of the regular season in control of their own destiny in the team's quest for the No. 2 seed in next week's OVC Basketball Championship. A win will secure the No. 2 seed outright and the accompanying double-bye in the tournament field while a loss would see the Skyhawks look for help from Tennessee Tech to knock off Little Rock and give the squad the seeding tiebreaker.
UT Martin enters the contest riding a four-game winning streak after knocking off Tennessee Tech on Thursday night by a 67-37 margin. The Skyhawks snapped the Golden Eagles six-game winning streak and held TTU to its lowest scoring output against an OVC foe in program history. Anaya Brown posted her ninth double-double of the season, tallying 23 points and 12 rebounds in the win, while Love Mays (12 points), Kenley McCarn (11 points) and Lexi Rubel (10 points) also scored in double figures.
Tennessee State (9-18, 6-11 OVC) has its season on the line as the Lady Tigers need a win and a Southeast Missouri loss to earn the No. 8 seed in next week's OVC Basketball Championship. TSU has struggled on the road this season, entering the contest with an 0-12 record in true road games. Most recently the squad fell on the road to Little Rock, dropping the 68-46 contest. Leading the way for TSU is transfer Sanaa' St. Andre who ranks fourth in the OVC with 15.7 points per game while Zyion Shannon (11.1 ppg) and Saniah Parker (10.2 ppg) also score in double figures.
Saturday's contest marks the 71st matchup between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 40-30 advantage in the all-time series. After meeting in the OVC opener, the two teams now conclude their regular season slates against each other in a full-circle moment. UT Martin picked up a win in the Gentry Center back in December as three Skyhawks scored in double figures. The Skyhawks have held the upper hand against the Lady Tigers in recent history, winning eight of the last 10 contests.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
