The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team opens its final week of the regular season with a critical Ohio Valley Conference matchup against long-time conference rival Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Feb. 29. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (13-14, 10-6 OVC) head into the final week of the season looking secure a top-two seed in next week's OVC Basketball Championship in Evansville, Ind. While currently tied for third place in the OVC standings, the winner of Thursday night's showdown between UT Martin and Tennessee Tech will move into a two-way tie with Eastern Illinois for second place and the accompanying double-bye in next week's tournament.
UT Martin is looking to build off a three-game winning streak – including a road sweep of Lindenwood (65-56) and Southeast Missouri (64-61) last week. With the sweep, the Skyhawks concluded their road slate with a 7-2 record – finishing only behind league champion Southern Indiana for the best road record in the league. The Skyhawks will now look to lean upon the team's impressive history at home under head coach Kevin McMillan where they boast a 102-23 record against OVC foes in the Elam Center.
The tandem of Kenley McCarn and Anaya Brown have carried a heavy load for the Skyhawks this season while both ranking in the top-10 of the OVC's best scorers. McCarn ranks as the league's third best scorer with 16.6 points per game while eclipsing 20 points or more in nine contests this season, including 24 points against SEMO the last time out. Brown is creeping up on the top-five scorers as she ranks sixth with 15.1 points while sitting third in rebounding (8.7 rpg) and second in blocks (48).
Tennessee Tech (15-12, 10-6 OVC) enters the final push of the season as one of the league's hottest teams after winning six consecutive games. The Golden Eagles are led by OVC Preseason Player of the Year Maaliya Owens who ranks fifth in the league with 15.6 points per game while adding 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
The two storied programs have met 80 times on the hardwood with Tennessee Tech holding a 53-27 series advantage. When the two programs met earlier this season, UT Martin went on the road and knocked off the Golden Eagles by a final margin of 67-58.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
