MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team puts its winning streak on the line when it takes on Ohio Valley Conference foe SIUE. Tipoff tomorrow from First Community Arena is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks have won three of their last four games and have found immense success in league road contests - going 3-1 in such outings (with the only setback coming to league-leading Morehead State). A big part of UT Martin's success lately has been its defense as the Skyhawks have held three straight OVC opponents under 40 percent shooting for the first time since Jan. 14-21, 2017.
UT Martin and the Cougars enter the weekend with identical 13-9 overall records with 6-3 marks in OVC play as the two sides are tied for third place in the league standings.
The Skyhawks took two of the three matchups against SIUE last season, including the rubber game - a memorable 81-75 triumph in the OVC Championship quarterfinals. Jordan Sears went off for 33 points - 24 of which came in the second half as UT Martin overcame a double-digit second-half deficit in Evansville, Ind.
In three career games against the Cougars, Sears is averaging 27.3 points per outing on 54.2 percent shooting (26-of-48) and an 84.4 percent clip (27-for-32) from the free throw line. Desmond Williams also averaged 12.3 points while shooting 50 percent (9-of-18) from three-point land in three games last season against SIUE.
Sears (25 points), Williams (season-best 19 points) and Jacob Crews (12 points, game-high 16 rebounds) paced the Skyhawks to a convincing 76-59 triumph over Eastern Illinois on Thursday, starting a four-game road trip on a high note.
Winners of five of their last six contests, the Cougars improved to 10-1 at home after defeating Little Rock by a 68-66 margin on Thursday. SIUE overcame a nine-point deficit with 6:36 to go, capped off by a Shamar Wright go-ahead game-winning three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining.
