MARTIN, Tenn. – A little over eight months after the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad cut down the nets to celebrate an Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship, the Skyhawks begin the 2024-25 campaign under a new regime on the road against Illinois State.
Jeremy Shulman took over the reins of UT Martin men's hoops on March 27 and will make his Skyhawk debut after molding a 14-year dynasty at Eastern Florida State College.
Plenty of new faces dot the UT Martin roster in 2024-25 as 16 of the 17 players have never donned the Skyhawk uniform before. Two of those newcomers, redshirt senior forward Vladimer Salaridze (.447/.337/.741 shooting slash lines at UC Riverside the last two seasons) and junior guard Josué Grullon (1,112 points over the last two seasons at Daytona State College) were spotlighted as OVC "Players to Watch" going into the season.
Senior forward David Kamwanga (averages of 1.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 8.4 minutes per game in 2023-24) is the lone returner for UT Martin, who is coming off a 21-win season where it equaled a school record with 14 conference wins en route to its first league title in 15 years.
Illinois State is coming off a 15-17 campaign in 2023-24, which was the second season under the direction of head coach Ryan Pedon. The Redbirds return a pair of starting guards in Dalton Banks (8.5 points, team-high 3.7 assists per game) and Malachi Poindexter (8.6 points per outing, team-best 46 treys made) and were tabbed fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll.
In its lone exhibition tune-up, Illinois State defeated Lewis by a 72-65 margin on Oct. 26. Northern Iowa transfer Landon Wolf poured in a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting while Banks tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
