MURRAY, Ky. - The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team put together a historic effort with season highs across all three categories Sunday but ultimately it was not enough as it fell to Jacksonville State, 4682-4665, at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Ky.
The Skyhawks' 4,665 aggregate points ranked as the most in school history, topping the previous record of 4,659 from Nov. 17, 2023 at Jacksonville State. UT Martin's 2,346 air rifle points were the second-highest tally in school history behind the 2,347 accrued at the NCAA Qualifier on Feb. 22, 2014.
Freshman Sadie Palfrey also got in on the record-setting day as her 587 in smallbore topped the five previous scorers who shot a program-best 586 from 2017 through 2024.
The Skyhawks led the match after smallbore, 2319-2313, but the Gamecocks rallied to top UT Martin in air rifle, 2369-2346, to seal the match win.
Palfrey's 587 in smallbore was in addition to a 593 in air rifle, leading all shooters in the match with an 1180 to tie her previous aggregate career best. Joey Kovach had a season best 580 in smallbore and a 582 in air rifle for his best aggregate score of the season at 1162.
Rachel Haines also had a career day posting personal bests in smallbore at 561 and aggregate at 1138. Jesse Chamberlain set new season season-highs for himself in all three categories with a 573 in smallbore and a 579 in air rifle for an 1152 aggregate, while Jeffrey Bourassa rounded out the season-highs for the Skyhawks with a 572 in air rifle.
The Skyhawks return to action next weekend, Nov. 1-2, with back-to-back matches at Morehead State against the host Eagles.
