MARTIN, Tenn. – Year Two of the Chase Thrasher Era begins this week when the University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo team starts the 2023-24 season at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo. on Thursday, Sept. 21 through Saturday, Sept. 23.
The Skyhawks return 20 student-athletes (16 women, four men) and welcome in a dozen newcomers (seven women, five men) on this year's roster. Last season, the men's squad placed in the top-two in six of their 10 regular season rodeos (including a pair of victories) and the women's team earned top-two finishes – including one win – in five separate rodeos. The men's team qualified for its 48th appearance in the College National Finals Rodeo in the last 49 years behind 5,630 points – which ranked seventh nationally headed into the weeklong event.
The UT Martin women's team returns the most experience of both squads as five different cowgirls ranked in the top-15 in the Ozark Region in their respective events in 2022-23. That group is headed by senior Emma Kate Wilder, who ranked third in women's all-around (587 points), fifth in breakaway roping (300 points) and ninth in goat tying (287 points). The freshman tandem of Savannah Moran (2023 CNFR participant who ranked third with 445 points in barrel racing) and Allie Maxwell (fifth with 390 points in barrel racing) both produced top-five regional finishes while Brianna Pugh (255 points) and Sage Thomas (165 points) ranked seventh and 15th, respectively, in breakaway roping.
This weekend's season opener at Missouri Valley College is the first of 10 events on the Ozark Region schedule in 2023-24. The Skyhawks will also pay a visit to West Alabama (Sept. 28-30), Three Rivers College (Oct. 5-7), Southern Arkansas (Nov. 2-4) and Murray State (Nov. 16-18) this fall.
The Ozark Region 2024 spring schedule includes trips to East Mississippi Community College (March dates to be announced), Pearl River Community College (March 21-23), Arkansas-Monticello (April dates to be announced) and Northwest Mississippi Community College (April 25-27).
Once again, UT Martin will host its 56th Annual Spring College Rodeo as this year's three-day event is set for April 11-13 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
The 76th Annual CNFR is set to be held in Casper, Wyo. as this year's dates are June 9-15. The Skyhawk cowboys will look to add to their nine national top-10 finishes at the CNFR since 2005, relying heavily on a returning group that includes graduate Nolan Gregory (team roping), senior Walter Smithson (breakaway roping, bareback riding), senior Clint Southworth (calf roping, team roping) and sophomore Noah Beshears (calf roping and team roping).
