MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2023 edition of the Grover Page Classic will take place on Monday, Sept. 18 through Tuesday, Sept. 19 as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf program will once again serve as hosts of the 20th annual event at Jackson Country Club.
A total of 14 teams and 94 players will descend upon the West Tennessee area for the Grover Page Classic next week. Joining the Skyhawks in the field is Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Missouri State, Murray State, New Orleans, Nicholls, Presbyterian, Samford, SIUE, Southeastern Louisiana, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
Following a practice round on Sunday, Sept. 17, the 54-hole stroke play event officially begins the following day with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. The first two rounds will take place on Monday as UT Martin is paired alongside Tennessee Tech and Belmont on Holes No. 1-3. The final round will occur on Tuesday, once again ignited by an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. Built in 1914, the Jackson Country Club is a par-72 course that is playing at 6,849 yards.
Monday's forecast calls for sunny conditions with a high of 82 degrees and 6 mph winds out of the north. Round 3 on Tuesday will feature mostly sunny skies, a high of 84 degrees and 6 mph east winds. In the two years since the Grover Page Classic has been moved to the fall semester, UT Martin has taken advantage of favorable weather – shooting a combined 19-under par en route to first- and third-place finishes in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
This year's event is the first since the passing of the tournament's namesake. An Augusta, Ga. native, Page was tabbed as the Skyhawks' first head golf coach and served in that role for 35 seasons. The 2002 UT Martin Athletics Hall of Fame inductee passed away at the age of 88 on Dec. 17, 2022.
The Skyhawks will be back in action for the first time since the season-opening Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff held in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on Sept. 4-5. Competing against a stacked field, freshman Grant Phillips guided UT Martin with a team-best 219 (+3), a score that ranked 22nd in the field of 72 participants.
All nine Skyhawks on the 2023-24 roster will take part in the Grover Page Classic. Bryson Morrell boasts a trio of top-three career finishes in this event, successfully navigating Jackson Country Club to the tune of 15-under par in the past two years combined. Jacob Uehlein finished sixth in the tournament as a freshman before dialing up consecutive top-15 finishes in the last two seasons. Jonathan Xoinis carded a fifth-place finish in the 2021 event while Garrett Chumley placed 20th in the field last fall.
