MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time ever, the University of Tennessee at Martin and Toledo University will meet on the baseball diamond as the Skyhawks host the Rockets for games on Tuesday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 8. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on both days.
These contests conclude a season-long eight-game homestand for UT Martin (3-9). Last weekend in a three-game series against Kent State, the Skyhawk offense was paced by Zac Rice (team-best .364 batting average) and Jack Culumovic (team-highs of .500 on-base percentage and .889 slugging percentage). Caleb Hobson also went a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases, extending his season total to an Ohio Valley Conference-best 11 swipes through 12 games.
In addition to steals, Hobson leads the OVC in triples (two) and ranks seventh with 10 runs scored. Rice ranks in the OVC's top-10 in doubles (four, third), stolen bases (five, fifth) and hits (13, seventh) while Andrew Fernandez and Blaze Bell are both tied with Rice for third in the league with four doubles apiece.
On the pitching side, Campbell Cleveland, Trey Ricko, Zach Wager and Choyce Diffey each combined for an 0.00 ERA over 4.2 combined innings out of the bullpen against Kent State. Cleveland ranks third in the OVC in saves (two) and fourth in games finished (three) during the early stages of the 2023 campaign.
Sophomore right-hander J. Henry Hobson (1-0, 3.00 ERA) and freshman lefty Wager (0-1, 3.38) are listed as UT Martin's probable starting pitchers for the Toledo series. Each of those Skyhawk hurlers are slated to make their fourth appearance and second start of the spring against the Rockets.
Toledo enters the series with a 5-4 overall record after a three-game road sweep at Middle Tennessee over the weekend, outscoring the Blue Raiders by a 32-10 margin.
The Rockets have outhomered their opponent by a 19-5 margin in 2023 as Garret Pike leads the squad with four home runs and 13 RBI's. Jeron Williams' .357 batting average ranks as a team-high as four Toledo regulars are hitting .313 or higher.
Freshman left-hander RJ Shunck (0-0, 27.00 ERA) is set to make his third appearance and first collegiate start on Tuesday while redshirt freshman righty Dane Hall (0-0, 10.80 in two starts) is the probable starting pitcher for the Rockets on Wednesday. Toledo's top two arms out of the bullpen are right-handers Camryn Szynski (1.59 ERA, two saves) and Cal McAninch (2.92 ERA over 12.1 innings).
