MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball squad will play in front of the home crowd as the Skyhawks take on Ohio Valley Conference rival Chattanooga for a double dual on Tuesday, March 21. The matches will begin at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
UT Martin (6-6) officially begins its OVC title defense as the Skyhawks became the first program to sweep both the OVC regular season and tournament championships a year ago. Tomorrow's 1 p.m. match will count towards the OVC standings while the second one will not. The first match of the double dual opens a 10-match OVC slate for UT Martin in 2023.
Through 12 matches so far this spring, 13 different Skyhawk pairings have combined to win 61.7 percent of their head-to-head matchups (37 of 60). UT Martin is exactly 8-4 at each of the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions while adding five victories at the No. 1 slot.
Kambree Lucas and Olivia O'Keefe are the only Skyhawk pairing to compete together in all dozen matches this season as their four wins at No. 1 lead the squad. The team of Lucy Kaufman/Dylan Mott pace UT Martin with four victories at No. 2 while Kayla Bryant/Addy Vaughn have secured a team-best five triumphs at No. 3. The Skyhawk teams of Kayla Carrell/Haeleigh Paulino (three wins) and Ryan Rednour/Jenna Vallée (four victories) guide the team at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
On an individual basis, Vallée and Vaughn have each captured a team-best eight wins while Kaufman, Bryant, Carrell, Lucas, O'Keefe and Rednour all follow closely behind with seven victories apiece for UT Martin.
The Skyhawks have accounted for two of the three OVC Pair of the Week honorees this season as Bryant/Vaughn (Feb. 28) and Lucas/O'Keefe (March 7) brought home those awards in back-to-back weeks.
UT Martin is 4-2 all-time against the Mocs, having won four of the last five matchups. These two squads have only met once at the Skyhawk Beach Volleyball Complex, a 3-0 UT Martin triumph on Day 1 of the 2021 OVC Championship tournament.
Picked second in the OVC preseason poll behind the Skyhawks, Chattanooga (4-3) enters on a three-match winning streak. Neva Clark (Preseason No. 1 ranked player in the OVC) and Joy Courtright (Preseason No. 9 ranked player in the OVC) have teamed up to go 4-3 at No. 1 while Madelina Myers-Osband and Kaye Greshman account for a team-high five individual victories so far in 2023.
