MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf program looks to defend its Carpenter/Chaney Classic title this weekend when the second annual event kicks off the 2023 spring schedule.
The match-play tournament, co-hosted by the Skyhawks and Morehead State and named after Ohio Valley Conference legendary golf coaches Jerry Carpenter and Dr. Rex Chaney, is in its second year of existence. Last season, UT Martin topped the eight-team field at Tunica National in Tunica, Miss., going a perfect 3-0 against the likes of Austin Peay, Murray State and Tennessee Tech.
This year's event has expanded to 10 teams and is being held at Indian River Preserve Golf Club in Mims, Fla. – a par-72 course playing at 7,019 yards. In addition to the Skyhawks and Morehead State, the field includes six golfers apiece from Bellarmine, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Lindenwood, Missouri State, Omaha, SIUE and Tennessee Tech.
The action begins with 36 holes on Friday, Feb. 10 as the first round will feature UT Martin against Bellarmine at 6:30 a.m. CST. The second round will tee off at approximately 11:30 a.m. as the Skyhawks are pitted against Eastern Illinois. The final round will take place at 8:36 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 as UT Martin is matched up against Tennessee Tech.
The Skyhawk lineup for this event includes Cayden Chambers, Dax Isbell, Bryson Morrell, Ethan Ray, Jacob Uehlein and Jonathan Xoinis. All six have collegiate match play experience as Ray earned a victory against Western Kentucky at the Clash at the Country Club event held in Paducah, Ky. on Oct. 24. Isbell, Chambers and Xoinis also took part in that 18-hole tournament which closed out UT Martin's fall schedule.
Last season at the Carpenter/Chaney Classic, Xoinis went a perfect 3-0 while Uehlein (2-0-1), Morrell (two victories) and Chambers also accounted for head-to-head victories. The trio of Xoinis, Morrell and Uehlein also carded match-play wins at the 2022 OVC Championship held at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Carpenter/Chaney Classic is the first of seven tournaments on the Skyhawks' spring slate. UT Martin will go back to Florida for the Mickey Mouse Intercollegiate on Feb. 19-21 before taking part in Tennessee Tech's Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate on March 12-14. The month of April includes a visit to Louisville, Ky. for the Ernie Denham Classic (April 3-4), a trip to Tennessee State's Big Blue Intercollegiate (April 10-11) and the Mountaineer Invitational in Bridgeport, W.Va. on April 17-18. The Skyhawks will then go for their third consecutive league title at the OVC Championships, once again held at Dalhousie Golf Club on April 23-26.
