The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will hit the road to close out the weekend with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tipoff from the Eblen Center is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
UT Martin is in a critical stretch of the 2022-23 season as just three games remain on the regular season schedule. The Skyhawks enter the matchup with an 11-15 overall record while more importantly boasting a 7-8 league record. Another win in the final three games will clinch a spot in the upcoming OVC Basketball Championship while the Skyhawks are competing for a top-four seed and the accompanying first round bye. The squad enters the matchup in a three-way tie for the No. 4 spot with SIUE and Southeast Missouri.
The Skyhawks came up with a big win on Thursday evening as they held off SIUE for a season sweep after a jumper by Sharnecce Currie-Jelks with 4.1 seconds to play lifted the squad to a 77-76 overtime victory. Currie-Jelks – a seven-time OVC Freshman of the Week – notched her fifth 20-point outing of the season after scoring a game-high 26 points in the win while also adding eight rebounds. Along with the big game by Currie-Jelks, the Skyhawks had three other players join her in double figures with strong games by Anaya Brown (15 points, seven rebounds, four steals), Paige Pipkin (14 points, five assists, four steals) and Josie Storey (11 points, seven rebounds).
Tennessee Tech enters the matchup at 16-9 on the season while boasting a 10-5 record in league play. The Golden Eagles were tabbed as the preseason favorites and currently sit securely in third place in the OVC standings. TTU has been hot as of late by winning three of its last four outings while holding an 11-2 record at home.
The Golden Eagles feature two players which average in double figures offensively with Maaliya Owens pacing the team at 14.0 points per game while Jada Guinn averages 10.2 points and 3.8 assists per contest.
Saturday's contest marks the 79th meeting between the two programs in series history with Tennessee Tech holding a 51-27 advantage. Tennessee Tech swept the season series last season while also picking up a road win in Martin back on Jan. 7 by a score of 61-49.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will have the call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
