MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off one of its best defensive performances in the last decade, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team takes on Ohio Valley Conference rival SIUE on Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. The backend of the doubleheader is set for 8 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's contest).
On Saturday against Little Rock, the Skyhawks held the Trojans to 10.5 percent shooting (2-of-19) from beyond the three-point arc, including an 0-for-16 effort in the last 35-plus minutes of the contest. It marked UT Martin's lowest opponent field goal percentage from three-point land since March 6, 2013 - a span of 307 games.
Parker Stewart (18 points), Jalen Myers (15), KJ Simon (14) and Jordan Sears (12) all scored in double figures for the Skyhawks in last Saturday's 84-61 triumph, which doubled the program's win total from last season. The 23-point decision also marked UT Martin's largest margin of victory in league play since Feb. 1, 2017.
The Skyhawks will look for a season split against the Cougars as SIUE claimed an 89-75 win two weeks ago in Edwardsville. Sears led the way for UT Martin with team-highs of 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Simon (13 points), Myers (10) and Desmond Williams (10) also scored in double digits.
This game will feature the OVC's best home squad in the Skyhawks (13-1, .929 win percentage) against the league's top road team in the Cougars (7-6, .538).
SIUE saw its three-game winning streak come to an end last Saturday, falling 84-73 to Eastern Illinois at home. Three-time OVC Newcomer of the Week Damarco Minor scored 19 points while the Cougars were also paced by Shamar Wright (17 points) and DeeJuan Pruitt (12 points).
In the Feb. 2 matchup between SIUE and UT Martin, Ray'Sean Taylor (27 points, 10 rebounds) and Pruitt (11 points, 13 rebounds) each hauled in double-doubles while Minor and Wright accounted for 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) will broadcast the game live from courtside on both ESPN+ and on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, in addition to a link to follow along via live stats, can be found above.
