
SKYHAWKS HEAD TO TENNESSEE TECH TO CLOSE OUT OPENING WEEKEND OF OVC PLAY

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will continue its trek through the Volunteer State with a road matchup at Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Dec. 30 to cap off the 2023 year.
The Skyhawks (4-8, 1-0 OVC) are hoping to ring in the new year with one more victory before the calendar switches to 2024 after posting its first back-to-back wins of the season against Arkansas State (67-62) and Tennessee State (75-69) over the past week. During that stretch, the Skyhawks held their opponents to a 38.4 shooting percent while outrebounding them by 19.
In the team's most recent outing, UT Martin picked up its first league victory after leading for 37 minutes against Tennessee State while destroying them on the boards by a 47-34 margin. Both Anaya Brown and Lexi Rubel did the heavy lifting on the boards by combining for 28 rebounds – including the first career double-double for Rubel with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the win. Brown – the reigning OVC Player of the Week – has secured 15 or more rebounds in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2014 season and is averaging 13.0 points and 16.0 rebounds in the last two games.
Redshirt-freshman Kenley McCarn ranks third in the OVC in scoring average with 16.3 points per game and has reached double figures in seven straight games – including her fourth 20-point scoring performance in a win at TSU. True freshman Norah Clark has also been impressive by averaging 15.0 points per game in the last three contest while setting a new career-high with 18 points on Thursday night.
Tennessee Tech (5-7, 0-1 OVC) is the reigning OVC Tournament champion and saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a narrow 59-57 loss to defending league champion Little Rock on Thursday evening. The Golden Eagles feature OVC Preseason Player of the Year Maaliya Owens who averages 15.4 points per game while adding 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
In a long-standing series which dates back to 1969 between two tradition-rich programs, Tennessee Tech holds a 53-26 advantage in the all-time matchup over UT Martin. The two programs have combined to win 25 OVC championships while the Golden Eagles have swept the season series the past two seasons over the Skyhawks.
