UT MARTIN VOLLEYBALL RETURNS HOME FOR WEEKEND SERIES AGAINST OVC NEWCOMER WESTERN ILLINOIS

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad plays host to Ohio Valley Conference rival Western Illinois at Skyhawk Fieldhouse this weekend, taking on the Leathernecks on its home court for the second straight season. First serve on ESPN+ is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Although Western Illinois is in the midst of its debut season in the OVC, UT Martin hosted the Leathernecks as part of the Skyhawk Invitational on Sept. 2, 2022 – picking up a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-12, 25-21) in the only all-time meeting between these two schools in Martin. In that match, Kayla Bryant (eight kills on a .350 hitting percentage) and the duo of Haeleigh Paulino (match-highs of 17 assists and three service aces)/Hannah Haislip (14 assists) keyed the Skyhawk offense while Dylan Mott (match-best 16 digs) and Mia Saenz (three blocks) set the tone defensively.
UT Martin (4-13, 2-5 OVC) won its first OVC home match last week, downing Tennessee State in four sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23) on Oct. 3. Paulino was one of four Skyhawks to pile up double-digit kills on the way to her first career triple-double (10 kills, 32 assists and 10 digs). With that feat, UT Martin has now dialed up the only two triple-doubles in the OVC in 2023 (Addy Vaughn also had 11 kills, 18 assists and 14 digs at Lipscomb on Sept. 7).
So far in league play, Kayla Carrell ranks fourth in the OVC with 4.72 digs per set. Olivia Saunders additionally ranks seventh in the conference in blocks (1.0 per set) for the Skyhawks.
Western Illinois (5-11, 4-2 OVC) is coming off a home sweep over Little Rock last weekend, winning in four sets on Friday before a five-set victory on Saturday. Brittany Wulf – who had 12 kills, 10 digs and four service aces in the matchup at UT Martin last season – was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week after slamming down 33 combined kills on a .317 attack percentage against the Trojans, adding five service aces in Saturday's series finale alone.
